Red Jacket

Literary Period
Red Jacket was a main part of the Enlightenment period. More specifically, Red Jacket is in the Age of Reason, one of two parts of the Enlightenment. This phase was more focused on logic than the previous phase, the Age of Faith. A large portion of the Enlightenment is the focus on equality, which is heavily featured in Red Jacket’s works. In many of his speeches he is defending the Senecas because he believes that they are equal to the other Americans and deserve the same rights. Some might argue that Red Jacket can be seen as part of the transition between Age of Faith and Age of Reason which is understandable considering how often he talks about religion. However, he is still focused more on reason in his speeches. For example, in his defense for the Senecas religion, he does not completely say that they should because their religion states they have the right. He instead uses the logic that the Americans have used in their case. Even the fact that he gave speeches adds to his credibility as a participant of the Enlightenment considering speeches were a large aspect of this period. Thus, it can be seen that Red Jacket participated and made a large impact in the Age of Reason of the Enlightenment by giving speeches that were based on logic and reason more than religion.
